Inkosi ya Makosi Gomani V has challenged Malawians to take ownership of development, abandon laziness and work hard to fight hunger and poverty.
He made the call during this year’s Umhlangano wa Maseko Ngoni Festival, an annual cultural ceremony held in Ntcheu Distrcit under the theme: ‘Strengthening Unity, Culture and Community Development’.
Addressing the gathering, Gomani said Malawians needed to take responsibility for the development of their communities and the country.
“We need to work hard if we are to fight hunger and poverty,” he said.
Gomani also called on people to protect trees and the environment, while expressing concern over conducting marriages without following proper cultural procedures.
In his speech, guest of honour, Minister of Youth and Sports Alfred Gangata said culture is the nation’s identity which tells people who they are, where they are coming from and what to pass on to the next generation.
He said this year’s theme presents a powerful message that when people stand together as a country, they become stronger.
First Vice-President Jane Ansah, Minister of Education Bright Msaka and UDF president Atupele Muluzi also attended the ceremony.
The event started in the morning with activities ranging from traditional dances and cultural performances to indigenous food exhibitions, heritage activities and traditional rites.
Traditional dance groups from Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia also took part in the ceremony.
The programme further included discussions on community development and social issues, while traditional foods and cultural practices were showcased.
Umhlangano was revived and formalised by Gomani V in 2013 as an annual all-kingdom ceremony aimed at strengthening unity among the Maseko Ngoni, connecting Ngoni communities across borders and preserving their culture for future generations.
This year’s edition was the first since its formalisation to run for six consecutive days.
Earlier, Gangata led a wreath-laying ceremony at the grave of Inkosi ya Makosi Gomani I.
He was followed by Ansah, Msaka, Dzonzi Mvai legislator Dyless Mbengo and other dignitaries.
In the evening, musicians Zeze and Maseba entertained patrons as the celebrations continued.
